Xotehe Basket by Yanomami People

Handmade of Titica Vine

The fairly recent contacted Yanomami are the hunter-agriculturists of the tropical rainforest of Northern Amazonia. The ethnonym 'Yanomami' comes from the the expression yanõmami thëpë that signifies 'human beings'. For the Yanomami, urihi, the forest-land, is not a mere inert space for economic exploration (of what we call 'nature'). It is a living entity, part of a complex cosmological dynamic of exchanges between humans and non-humans.
