Atxua I Atuyuwa Mask
Heritage and Construction
Handcrafted in the Upper Xingu region of Brazil, the Atxua Mask is a sacred expression of Mehinako spiritual heritage and fiber craftsmanship. Belonging to the Apapaatai tradition of nature spirits, each piece is woven from resilient Buriti palm fiber and detailed with native cotton. The mask is hand-painted with traditional geometric graphisms using natural pigments extracted from Urucum (annatto) and Jenipapo fruits.
Use and Form
Originating from shamanic healing and protection rituals, the Atxua mask embodies the presence of ancestral forest guardians. Designed to be displayed as a wall piece, its open fringe and natural pigments bring a bold, sculptural presence and deep cultural heritage into any living space. Subtle variations in fiber length, weave density, and painted graphisms are inherent to the individual artisan's hand.
