Xavante Baquité Carrier Basket
Heritage and Artistry
An expression of Xavante (A’uwe) material culture from the Brazilian Cerrado, the Baquité is a masterclass in indigenous forest technology. Crafted under the teachings of tribal elders, each vessel is hand-woven from wild-harvested Buriti palm fiber (Mauritia flexuosa). This intricate weave results in a piece that is remarkably lightweight and weather-resistant, yet structurally engineered to support heavy weight during long treks, keeping ancestral practices alive for new generations.
Form and Typology
The woven architecture of the Xavante is highly adaptable, shifting in scale and application to serve the community’s daily life.
-
Baquité — the foundational carrying basket, historically used for gathering and transport.
-
Si'õno A'upté wapé zé — an oversized, cradle-like iteration designed to securely carry newborns or serve as a resting crib on the earth.
-
Abemerê — a versatile, over-the-shoulder or tote adaptation for daily domestic use.
