Kraho Cofo Carrier Basket
Heritage and Artistry
An expression of Mehim (Krahô) material culture from the Brazilian Cerrado, the Cofo is a foundational piece of indigenous weaving and daily utility. Traditionally crafted using wild-harvested Buriti palm fiber (Mauritia flexuosa), this carrying basket represents the deep relationship between the Krahô people and their ancestral territory in the Tocantins region. Woven for resilience, the Cofo was historically designed for the transport of foraged seeds, harvested crops, and provisions during long treks across the scrublands.
Form and Function
The enduring strength of the Krahô Cofo lies in its structural adaptability. Woven with a flexible yet robust body, the basket expands to accommodate heavy loads while remaining remarkably lightweight when empty. The integrated woven strap is designed for practical, ergonomic transport—traditionally slung over the shoulder or worn across the forehead—making it a highly functional vessel for modern daily use.
